Welcome to Seward!
Seward is located south of Anchorage. It is in the top ten of the U.S.A.'s most lucrative fisheries. This little port happens to be a major port of call for Alaska's cruise lines, and is a terminal for the Alaska Railroad.
Day Activities:
One of the most common activities in the summer is fishing. Resurrection Bay is known for monster Halibut and ocean salmon. You can also find small crabs, sea mammals, and plenty of rockfish and other creatures. Tidal pools are a common sight along the beach. Please check the city's website for information about the Silver Salmon Derby.
Another common activity is a day cruise, we recommend the Kenai Fjords Glacier cruise. You can see whales and lots of other wildlife on these cruises, and they are very popular among the locals.
There is also the Seward Sealife Center for kids. This research facility and aquarium hosts many of Alaska's natural wildlife including seals, octopus, and plenty of fish. They have activities for all ages and you are sure to leave with stories to tell your family back home.
Points of Interest:
A must see in this town is on 4th of July weekend every year.
The tradition, Mount Marathon Race, started when two sourdough's (old Alaskan's)
made a bet about whether or not you could run up and back down the mountain in
an hour. Well the sourdough that said it could be done lost, but only by
two minutes. Alas, he still lost and had to furnish drinks for the small crowd
that formed.
When the race was officially recorded in 1915 it became a park
of Seward's history.
Now, with the town's population increasing from 3000 to
30,000 for the race, there are tons of activities involved. If you want to
see Seward in its peak, this is the weekend to go and enjoy some fishing, and a
nice marathon!
